The Boyley Cup turned 17 a few weeks ago at the KV Swimming Pool, where the community has been turning out regardless of weather, pandemic and road closures to compete in the spirit of fun, friendship and swim fitness for the winner’s towels and trophy. This year we welcome back into the winner’s circle the Domestic Goddesses, our inaugural winners from 2008.

As usual, the very exciting final was a mix of ages and abilities, the Sea Furies, Da Goat, the Budgie Smugglers and Boyley’s Angels taking out the other prizes. It was fast and furious, and as usual teams seemed to find that something extra, which often ends up in disqualifications.

The cup remembers Ian Boyle for the inspirational friend and mentor he was to so many. Ian would encourage those around him to put their best foot forward. He loved the cup for it’s inclusiveness and teamwork.

Inch by Inch life’s a cinch, Yard by Yard life is hard

Thanks go to our local monthly Kangaroo Valley Voice, now our official sponsor, whose donation of $500 enabled many prizes on the night. KV Electrical has been with the cup since inauguration, offering the fastest team on the night the $100 prize, this year Boyley’s Angels. Thanks also to The Heaven’s Mountain Escape for their prize money for the most senior team, last year’s winners, Grey Matter, and the youngest team the Baby Sharks, a team of under 10 year old girls.

On the night our team of helpers turn up and then it’s ready steady GO!. Thanks to Vicki and Livia Barger for keeping the night running smoothly, Andrew Hanbrook for chief timekeeper, and all other helpers. Special mention this year must go to Ross and Yvonne Eichorn, who found themselves in Auckland airport when the call went out for the much loved ‘Chocolate Fish’. I believe they wiped out all supplies before boarding their plane back to Sydney, but their generosity ‘saved’ the night. Thank you to Sue Boyle for the winner’s towels and the Lions Club for their amazing energy in sustaining us all throughout the night with sausage sizzle and hot drinks.

Remember to put 25 February in your diary for the 2025 Boyley Cup.
