different countries. Last month we discovered the opulence of China’s Tang dynasty, this month we are off to Italy to discover the unique character of Venetian art, shaped by the city’s geography and atmospheric light, with the esteemed art historian Alice Foster. These monthly lectures are a wonderful and informal way to make friends and to get to know others in our community. The Colours of Venice
15 May 2025 – 7.30pm – Berry Uniting Church Hall, 71-77 Albert Street Berry
Discover the uniquely luminous world of Venetian art in this captivating lecture. Unlike their Renaissance counterparts, Venetian artists embraced colour, texture, and shifting light, inspired by their city’s watery surroundings. From the glittering mosaics of San Marco to the radiant altarpieces of Titian and Bellini, and the charming scenes of Carpaccio and Longhi, this lecture explores how Venice’s isolation fostered a visual language rich in atmosphere, where artists painted not with lines, but with light-infused pigment.
