A treat for art lovers

A few glimpses below of the treats to be offered at this year’s Visual Arts in the Valley Festival to be held across the long weekend, 4-7 October, with the Formal Opening on the evening of Friday the 4th.  The main venue will be the Kangaroo Valley Hall, transformed into a contemporary art gallery for the occasion, plus other sites around the village and valley.  Put the dates in your diary and invite family and friends to come along!

Invited Gallery

We are excited to announce that Australian Galleries will open a Satellite Gallery in the Kangaroo Valley Hall over the weekend.  Established in 1956 in Melbourne, the gallery expanded to Sydney in 1989 and during this time has showcased a leading selection of modern and contemporary Australian artists, including Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Garry Shead and Peter Kingston.  Our Special Advisor, Rex Irwin, will be collaborating with their National Director to bring an interesting selection of works for you to enjoy, and perhaps purchase.

Salon of Local Artists Prize and Exhibition

The Salon of Local Artists will again be a major feature of the festival, with the prizes and exhibition curated and judged by Boe-lin Bastian, Curator at Bundanon.  The finalists’ artworks will be hung in the Kangaroo Valley Hall and the winning entrants announced at the Formal Opening on Friday 4 October at 6:30pm.  All finalist artworks will be available for sale.

Installation Art

Four Kangaroo Valley and South Coast artists will be collaborating to present a collective work at and around the Pony Club.  Wander down when visiting the Kangaroo Valley Hall Galleries and be prepared to be intrigued and challenged.

Kangaroo Valley Art Trail

Following the previous successes of the Kangaroo Valley Art Trail, it has been expanded to include several interesting new studio/galleries and new genres, including sculpture.  Pick up a map, explore the depth of artistic talent in the valley and maybe take home a new treasure.

Workshop

Kerrie Leishman, one of the artists on the Art Trail, will be offering a workshop in her studio in Upper Kangaroo Valley.  Kerrie is a prominent artist who has had numerous solo exhibitions, as well as participating in many group exhibitions.  She has been represented by highly regarded galleries in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

Film Screening

Saturday evening at the Upper River Hall will be the setting for a screening of ‘The King Sun: John Olsen a Portrait at 85’. and a discussion by the filmmaker, Tony Williams of Four Donkey Films.  The documentary follows the progress of John Olsen’s painting of his last big mural based on the sun, which was later erected in the Collins Square project in Melbourne.  In the course of the film, John reflects on his life, his mortality, the sun, the landscape where he worked and how it felt to be in his 80s.  Join us for supper and a celebration of the life and work of this Australian icon.

4 Arts of a Kind

This is a festival innovation.  Artists from different genres will be given a theme for an artwork.  They will begin their work prior to the festival but will complete it together in a public space over a few hours on the festival weekend.  Watch and hear about the creative process and maybe get involved!
