It’s been a very eventful month at the KV tennis club. The flooding rains the Valley experienced on Friday the 5th of April saw the tennis courts underwater for the first time in years. The water came halfway up the net on Court 1 and the raging river was clearly visible from the courts. As we were inspecting the area, our son Samson noticed a wild bunny with its body trapped halfway through one of the diamond holes in the fencing of court 4 with the rising water lapping its belly. Remarkably, a tiny skink and a spider sat on top of the trapped bunny desperately and unsuccessfully trying to hitch a ride. We rescued the bunny and its travelling companions and after a nice warm cuddle, the bunny was happily released.

The waters receded just as quickly as they rose, but unfortunately a very muddy mess was revealed. A working bee was quickly arranged and on Sunday the 7th of April, the community came out in force to help clean up the courts, clubhouse and surrounds. Over 50 people (young and old) turned up in their gumboots with shovels, wheelbarrows, hoses & pressure cleaners at the ready! The wonderful local RFS also came down to help and were invaluable with their high-pressure hoses. Their advanced equipment saved countless hours of manual labour. Tennis Club President Peter Stanton was on the coffee machine and people brought food and ice blocks to help keep the morale high. It was an unbelievable achievement to get the courts back into shape within only a few hours. The club is so grateful to the wonderful, proactive KV community for its incredible support.

In more news, we’ve had some successful results with our junior players recently. Samson Hole & Elsie Moffat have both been selected in the South Coast tennis team and will represent our region at the PSSA State Championships in Newcastle in May. Our KVPS tennis team also experienced success when they played their first round of the PSSA South Coast knockout competition against Cambewarra Public School defeating them 8 sets to 0. Congratulations kids!

Social tennis is also thriving in the valley, particularly helped by the beautiful Autumn weather and perfect playing conditions. Men’s social tennis is played on Wednesday mornings from 8.30 – 10.30am and women’s social tennis is played on Thursday mornings from 9am. New players are most welcome!

If you’re interested in joining the club or having a game of tennis, please head to ClubSpark / Kangaroo Valley Tennis Club / Home to become a member or to book a court online.
