The Final

The match between Jane Haddon and myself was definitely worthy of being the Final. It was a nail biter. I had a great warm up but then froze for the first two ends of the match. I managed to fight back and the following first third of the match was very even, with both of us taking turns to score but only in ones or twos. It was going to be a long game! By end 16 I had managed to gain a seven-point advantage but still only scoring in ones and twos.

However, it was then Jane’s turn to gain the upper hand, keeping me to 16 points for eight ends. I did have my opportunities to close the match during this period, holding four points (the maximum points available in an end) at least four times. Only to have Jane show her skill each time, coming in with her last bowl to take the end! I did manage a final fight back and on end 28 the score was 23 to 24. Jane only needed one more point, which happened on the next end.

Congratulations Jane on a well-deserved win. I really enjoyed the challenge and look forward to our future matches.

Thank you to everyone who participated. It was a great competition played among friends.

Men’s

What’s happened to the Final of the Men’s Pairs Championship I hear you ask? The short answer is that Bob Dunn and I are still waiting on the outcome of two other games to find out who we have to play and these games have been stalled by the Open Pennants competition.

Open Pennants

In the last edition, based on information to hand at the time, I reported that the Grade 3 Pennant Team had a bye on 15 February. This was incorrect and in fact they had a very solid victory against Sussex Inlet RSL, winning two of the three games and drawing the other. With a total score of 80 to Berry and 33 to Sussex Inlet RSL, Berry came away with 9.5 of the available 10 points. Well done boys and my apologies for the previous advice.

On 23 February the Berry Grade 6 side was away to Shoalhaven Heads. Despite our best efforts we managed to win only one of the three games and lost by a total score of 51 points to 68 and therefore only won one competition point. The Grade 3 side actually had a bye.

Our run of poor form continued in the Grade 6 game against Callala at Berry on 2 March. Once again, we won only one of the three games and lost by a total of 57 points to 79 to secure only one competition point. The Grade 3 team was a way to Milton Ulladulla and despite only winning one game put up a very good fight to only lose by 64 points to 68. Despite a much better showing than the Grade 6 side, the Grade 3 side still only earned one competition point.

On 8 March the Grade 6 team travelled to Culburra where our good form returned. For most of the game we were ahead in all three games but on the final end we lost one of the games by one point. Nonetheless, we won the match by a total of 57 points to 42 and secured 9 of the available 10 points. An outstanding win to the Grade 3 team at home against the competition leaders Huskisson won our team all 10 competition points. In fact, they won all three games and the match by a total of 93 points to 25. A truly remarkable achievement.
