LADIES BOWLS

I wasn’t able to be present during our recent “Consistency” competition, however I have heard from all concerned though that it was a highly contested event, with keen competition for the gnome trophy. This competition, as the name suggests, tests the consistency of the 2 bowlers on each end with points awarded from 4 for the nearest bowl to the jack through to 1 point for the fourth closest. The first player to reach 150 points is the winner.

The Competition was as follows:

Round 1 – 15 October 2024

Sue Sheil 135 v Cathy Cole Clark 151   Marker – Irene Dunn

Laural Ferrington 76 v Ruth Willdig 154   Marker – Jane Haddon

Round 2 – 22 October 2024

Rosa Burns 150 v Cathy Cole Clark 90 Marker – Jane Haddon

Ruth Willdig 152 v Anna Stewart 137 Marker – Enid Hall

Gillian Portener 123 v Tina Ballard 154   Marker – Bernice Dobson

Semi Final – 29 October 2024

Rosa Burns 118 v Ruth Willdig 152

Jane Haddon 152 v Tina Ballard 118

Final – 31 October 2024

Ruth Willdig 150 v Jane Haddon 120 Marker – Peter Haddon

Congratulations Ruth on playing to a very high standard throughout the Competition.

Men’s Challenge Singles

Players in this competition are accorded a score from 0 (high expertise) through to 15 (lower expertise) depending on their assessed level of expertise. The difference between the two player’s scores is the score which the player with highest score commences on. On 9 October, I won my match against Laurie Watson and Darryl Goodger narrowly defeated Ron Nelson by 25 points to 24. Bob Dunn won his match against Jim Abbott on 19 October by 25 points to 21 and lost the semi-final against Frank Picciolini on 30 October by 26 points to 18. I subsequently won my semi-final match against Darryl Goodger and went on to win the final against Frank Picciolini.

Men’s Club Singles Championship

This hotly contested championship is the premier event on the bowls calendar. The Kangaroo Valley’s Adam Rigney has won the event on numerous previous occasions and I had the misfortune to draw him in the first round. Nonetheless, we had a very close match with the scores level at 23 all, before Adam scored two points on the last end to take the match by 25 points to 23. With an identical score, Bob Dunn also bowed out of the competition, going down to Steve Kellett by 25 points to 23. Terry Hayes won his match against Nathan Bezant and in the upset of the round Mark Power, who has also previously won this Championship, bundled Adam Rigney out of the competition. In his semi-final match against Mark Power, “Jingles” Chittick got off to a slow start but played steadily and managed to level the score on the eighteenth end. Thereafter the scores were level on the twentieth and twenty seventh end but Jingles scored the maximum available four points on the twenty eighth end and managed to maintain the lead to take the match by 25 points to 21.

Congratulations Jingles on making the final against Terry Hayes on 21 December. Good luck – you will certainly have a lot of support and I look forward to reporting on the outcome in the next edition.

Zone Fours

On 7 December the Berry team of Keith Pepper, Bob Dunn, Graham Hook and myself competed in the Zone President’s Reserves Fours competition at Merimbula.  We started well and got out to a solid lead however, playing on a synthetic surface under cover, whilst very enjoyable, proved trickier than anticipated. The surface was however very familiar to our opponents from Tura Beach and they simply got better as the game went on. The eventual outcome was that Tura Beach won the match by 24 points to 18 and progressed to the final in the afternoon. We can be proud of the fact that we made it so far but I must confess that the outcome was disappointing. There is always next year.

Christmas Party

The semi-finals of the Men’s Fours competition were held on 14 December together with three games of social triples. Following play over 40 members participated in the Berry Men’s and Women’s Bowling Clubs joint Christmas Party. Over 40 were in attendance at the sausage sizzle and a great time was had by all. Special mention must be made of the efforts of Jingles and Skippy Chittick and Terry Bezant who cooked the food.

I will report on the Fours competition in the next edition.

Hope to see you on the bowling green one day soon.
