WOMEN’S BOWLS
Pennants
The Women’s Pennant competition was very brief this year with only three teams competing in a total of four games and two byes. Laural Ferrington, Irene Dunn and Deb Folkard from the Kangaroo Valley played in the Berry Women’s Team.
Berry lost the first game on 9 July against Shoalhaven Heads despite winning one of the two matches by 17 points to 11. Unfortunately, the other match was a resounding win to Shoalhaven Heads by 31 points to 11 which resulted in Shoalhaven Heads earning four of the available five points. The tables were turned on 16 July when Berry secured four points against Culburra by winning one match by 23 points to 17 and losing the other by only two points. In the second round against Shoalhaven Heads on 18 July, Berry took all five points by winning one match 30 points to 19 and the other by 29 points to 21.
Going in to the final match on 8 August against Culburra, Berry only needed to win one competition point to progress to the Regional Play-offs. Despite losing one game by 22 points to eight and needing only to win one of the games, it looked likely that Berry would succeed. In the final end of the other game Berry was holding the shot, and the win, with only one shot to play. However, the final shot belonged to Culburra and sadly an excellent bowl by the Culburra Skip took the match by 18 points to 17 and Culburra progressed to the play-offs.
On a positive note, there is always next year.

MEN’S BOWLS
South East Region – Area A – Fours Championships
The “Area A” Fours Championships were held in the howling wind at Worrigee on 14 and 15 September. Berry competed in the ‘Men’s State’, ‘Men’s Senior’ and ‘Open Reserve’ competitions. All three are ‘sudden death’ competitions to determine who will represent Area A in the Regional Play-offs.
Men’s State – The Berry Team of Mark Sulis, Mark Power, Adam Rigney and Nathan Bezant went down in the first round against Culburra.
Men’s Senior – “Jingles” Chittick, David Badger, “Tige” Lidbetter and Terry Hayes played an absolute nail-biter against Shoalhaven Heads. After the usual 21 ends, the scores were locked at 22 all, so an extra deciding end had to be played. Berry was holding three very close shots but the Shoalhaven Heads Skip had the last bowl and managed to draw a shot inside all three Berry bowls to take the match by one point.
Open Reserve – In our first match against a Worrigee team on 14 September, Keith Pepper, Bob Dunn, Graeme Hook and Rob Folkard had a good win, holding the opposition scoreless until the eleventh end and taking the match by 38 points to three. The afternoon match against Shoalhaven Heads also resulted in a good win of 24 points to ten, which propelled us to the semi-finals on the following morning.
Arriving to even worse cold and windy conditions on 15 September and a semi-final match against another Worrigee team, we were surprised how well we adjusted to the changeable swirling winds. Our consistency, resulted in a respectable 25 points to eight victory and a spot in the final in the afternoon.
The final against Greenwell Point was a very tight match in which the lead changed hands a number of times and the scores were drawn on several occasions. With two ends to go we were behind by two points (17 to 19) but we managed to draw level again at 19 all going in to the final end. The last end was very tense, but excellent work by our lead and second gave us two close shots which the opposition Skip was unable to dislodge and we won the match by 21 points to 19.
As the winners of the Area A – Open Reserve Championships, we now progress to the Regional Play-offs in Merimbula on 7 December. Well done boys!
