MEN’S BOWLS

Men’s Triples Championship

The Triples Championship, which is contested by randomly selected teams, commenced on 6 July. Despite getting off to a slow start, Laurie Watson, Bob Dunn and Tige Lidbetter finished strongly to defeat the much-fancied team of George Waddell, Col Agar and Terry Hayes by 22 points to 19 and progress to the Final. Darryl Goodger, Jingles Chittick and Nathan Bezant had a much easier run defeating Tom Froggatt, Steve Kellett and Rob Folkard by 24 points to 13.

The Final, held on 24 July, was an absolute nail-biter. Laurie Watson, Bob Dunn and Tige Lidbetter played Keith Pepper, Mark Power and David Badger in a game that could have gone either way. With the scores locked at 24-all on the 24th end, David Badger’s team scored two points on the final end to win the Championship by 21 points to 19.

Challenge Singles Competition

The Challenge Singles and Challenge Pairs competitions are handicapped events in which participants are handicapped according to their perceived skill level.

In his first match of the Challenge Singles Bob Dunn had to give George Waddell a four-point start. Nonetheless, Bob won the match by 26 points to 23. I won my first game against Steve Kellett to progress to the semi-finals. In the semi-final, Bob Dunn started with a one-point advantage over me and I was very lucky to win the hard-fought match by 25 points to 17. Immediately after the semi-final I had to turn around and play the final against Col Agar as the annual presentation night was on that evening. Col started with a two-point advantage but soon raced away to a nine-point lead. I took a long time to get going but by the twentieth end the scores were locked at sixteen all. Thereafter, Col’s consistency came to the fore and after 29 ends he eventually won the match by 26 points to 21. Congratulations Col.

Challenge Pairs

In the final of the Challenge Pairs, Bob Dunn and I had to give Keith Pepper and Col Agar a six-point start. Bob and I started slowly and we remained behind on the scoreboard until the 18th end when we drew level at 19-all. Fortunately, we came good at the right end of the game and won the match by 24 points to 20 after 21 ends.

Presentation Night

The annual joint Men’s and Women’s Presentation Night was held on 27th July at the Berry Bowling Club after Social Bowls and at the conclusion of the Men’s Challenge Singles competition. This year’s event was very well attended by over 40 bowlers and a special guest, Mr Steve Munce of the South East Region Match Committee, was on hand to present some of the major awards.

Photographs of Kangaroo Valley residents who received awards are attached to this report. In addition to the awards covered by these photographs, the following KV residents also received other awards:

Laural Ferrington – Winner of the Minor Singles and Runner-up in the Minor Pairs (featured in the August edition and not in attendance at the Presentation night);

Bob Dunn – in the Winning Club Fours Team;

Gillian Portener – Runner-up in both the Major Minor Pairs and the Major Pairs;

Deb Folkard – Winner of both the Major Minor Pairs and Major Triples and Runner-up in the Major Singles; and

Rob Folkard – Runner-up in both the Mixed Fours and the Challenge Singles.

For the first time there were two special awards, known as the Magpie Awards, given by the Men’s Club to members for outstanding service. This year I am very proud to say that one was awarded to Deb Folkard and the other to Keith Pepper.
