As winter settles across the Valley, a different kind of warmth is spreading through our community ahead of World Blood Donor Day on 14 June.
With Australia achieving a record 1.66 million blood donations in 2024, yet still facing critical shortages, Kangaroo Valley residents are encouraged to contribute to this life-saving effort. New South Wales alone needs an additional 240 donations – daily – to meet patient needs, with our ageing population and advancing medical treatments driving increased demand.
While the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood mobile service won’t be visiting our valley directly, nearby opportunities are available for local donors. The mobile blood bank will be in Nowra from 23 to 29 June and Bowral from 7 to 13 July, making it convenient for valley residents to participate.
Plasma donations are particularly crucial, with Australia needing approximately 800,000 plasma donations annually. Remarkably, nearly half come from just 30,000 dedicated donors nationwide.
The need for donors is particularly acute during winter months, when regular donors may be affected by seasonal illnesses and unable to give. Each donation can help save up to three lives, with blood components used for cancer treatments, trauma cases, childbirth complications and a range of medical procedures.
To book your donation spot at either the Nowra or Bowral mobile service, telephone 13 14 95 or visit lifeblood.com.au.
