Folk Festival

We had a number of Kangaroo Valley Public School students sing or recite a poem at the Folk Festival on Saturday.

I would like to thank Bruce Latham who wrote the school song which was performed on the day by students from Kindergarten to Year 6 accompanied by Travis Frenay on guitar and Bruce on banjo. Bruce also organised the Children’s poetry competition which was a huge success!

Thank you to Kat Bevis who has worked with students individually and in small groups as part of her before and after school singing program to prepare students for their performances at the Folk Festival. It was a great opportunity for the children to showcase their talents and perform on stage in front of a larger audience.

I would also like to thank the visiting performers from the Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival and Stuart Leslie who always organises a fantastic line up to visit us at the school!

Project Platypus

We would like to thank our generous sponsors from Gum Tree Foundation – Winderong Farm, Shark Island Kangaroo Valley, Valley Voice, Fiona Phillips MP, a generous community member, Andrew FitzSimons along with the Kangaroo Valley Public School P&C who have all helped to ensure Project Platypus will go ahead in 2024!

‘Project Platypus’ is a joint initiative between four schools (Kangaroo Valley, Berry, Cambewarra and Terara Public Schools), the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre and University of NSW scientist Gilad Bino all coming together to study platypus. The project runs every 2 years allowing 40 students to participate. Over two days, students are immersed in scientific investigations relating to local platypus habitat needs and potential threats. This includes close encounters during the evening as they observe UNSW researchers measure, assess and microchip caught platypus before releasing them back into the river.

The sponsorship will help with some of the costs associated with the camp including bus hire, food, accommodation, Upper River Hall fees, buying native plants etc all of which would be contributing back to the local community in Kangaroo Valley.

We would greatly appreciate assistance from sponsors that might be able to help us continue this fantastic project this year and into the future. If you think you can help, please contact our relieving Principal Jennifer Arnott, jennifer.arnott3@det.nsw.edu.au

This year Project Platypus will be held on the 5th and 6th December and we look forward to sharing photos in the next edition of the Valley Voice.

End of Term Disco

To celebrate the end of Term, we held a Disco at Kangaroo Valley Hall in the last week of the school term.Thank you to our wonderful staff and of course the incredible DJ Tino for making our Disco night and end of Term celebrations so much fun! Lots of hours behind the scenes go into making this event and so many others run so smoothly. We have a wonderful team who just make it all happen from the setup to the cleanup – thank you everyone!

Illawarra Environmental Education Centre

On the very last day of Term 3, we visited Blackbutt Reserve to work with the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre Staff for a day of outdoor learning.

Get Hooked… It’s Fun to Fish

It was a great day for fishing as our 3-6 students finished their ‘Get Hooked…It’s Fun to Fish’ Program. Thank you to our volunteers who came along to share their expert fishing knowledge.
