Feeding a constantly ravenous teenage boy can be a big undertaking. Can you imagine having to cater for over 120 teenage boys, three meals a day, seven days a week? That is the mammoth task the Glengarry kitchen staff have on a daily basis, churning out more than 420 meals including staff meals. In addition to this there’s also morning tea, afternoon tea and supper.
The boys consume almost 40 litres of milk a day; they demolish more than 20 loaves of bread, 18kg of breakfast cereal, a whopping 10kg of yoghurt and four boxes of fruit. Making a simple Spaghetti Bolognese requires a massive 25kg of meat and huge quantities of pasta.
The dining hall is not all about food for the students; there are daily chores that the boys carry out on rotation. Some of those tasks include clearing away tables, wiping all surfaces, vacuuming and mopping and sorting out the rubbish and recycling. It’s not just about being fed, it’s about serving others and contributing to your community.
When staff heard there was an opportunity for Glengarry boys to help out at the Kangaroo Valley Show, they had the perfect job in mind – an Aussie favourite, the humble sausage sizzle. Three different groups of Scots boys spent Saturday afternoon cooking up a feast. Sausages, bread rolls and Zooper-doopers were on offer, plenty for everyone and even a few spares for the boys. All proceeds were donated to Kangaroo Valley Primary School.
Providing food for the students can be a very rewarding task, meal times are always a great opportunity to have some interaction with the boys – to share stories, wisdom and laughter. There’s certainly a great truth in the saying ‘The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach’.
We are always on the lookout for keen, enthusiastic catering staff. Please contact the Glengarry office on 4465 1089 if you’re interested.
