Firey Tales

Captain’s message
Thankfully, the summer proved to be quite uneventful, with no local fires of significance; however, things have been busy elsewhere and interstate, with members volunteering to go away on various strike teams to support other agencies.
Jamie has been away to both Victoria and Tasmania with arduous and remote area deployments, and Chloe and Harry driving north-west to Narrabri. Chloe also headed to Lismore after the recent flooding.
As we head into autumn, it is the perfect time to conduct those clean-ups and pile burns that had you worried about over summer, but it is also time to check your chimney and fireplaces before winter arrives.
We are conducting a project to record and map your local water supplies, either dams or large tanks, that could be made available as a resource for fires. If you would like us to visit and supply a Static Water Supply (SWS) sign, please either email the brigade at kangaroovalleyrfb@gmail.com or SMS Dusty at the number below.
As part of this, if you have coded electronic gates and are happy for us to securely record the details in case required for emergency access, please feel free to ring or contact me directly to discuss.
This may be something that can help save your property or a life, as time is critical.

‘Who we are’ photography contest winner – Harry Kielly!

The Shoalhaven District RFS recently ran a photo competition titled ‘Who we are’. Winners were selected by an independent panel of judges as well as by popular choice, and we are proud to say that one of our members – Harry Kielly – took out several of the top awards.

Harry’s photography skills were ably helped by his choice of content, which featured the teamwork of a KV RFS crew putting their training into action on the fire line. Well done Harry and crew, not only for capturing who we are but also some of what we do. For those who might have missed it, the winning photos can be seen on the Shoalhaven RFS Facebook page.

Pile burns and burning off

The Fire Permit season finished on 31 March and will recommence on 01 September 2025; however, there is a process that still needs to be adhered to prior to burning off in the off-season:

  1. You must NOTIFY the NSW RFS at least 24 hours before you light the fire.

Ways to notify the NSW RFS:

Online: Online at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or via the QR code.

Phone: Shoalhaven Fire Control Centre (FCC) 4424 4424 between 8.00 am and 4.00 pm Monday to Friday.

  1. You must ADVISE your immediate neighbours at least 24 hours before you light the fire.
  2. You must not light the fire if a Fire Danger Rating is HIGH or above.
  3. At least one responsible person must be present on site until it is extinguished.
  4. Check the upcoming weather conditions, as the pile may continue to smoulder for days.
  5. If you believe you cannot safely control the fire once it has been lit, dial 000.

If you have concerns about doing this yourself, please get in touch with the KV Fire Brigade, and we can possibly assist you with your pile burn or check your site for you.
