Firey Tales

Captain’s Message
Another quiet month for us with just the two incident calls as detailed below. Members have remained busy assisting several landowners with pile burns and training exercises with other brigades.
Like everyone, we are hoping for a quiet Summer to spend at home, but things so far are very dry. Extra care will need to be taken with your pile burns to ensure that they remain under control, Also please ensure that the upcoming weather for next 2 days is checked before lighting up.
We would like to thank our generous donors throughout the year who help keep the brigade running and enable us to purchase some essential equipment that helps make us more efficient and remain as one of the most capable volunteer brigades in the district.
Lastly thankyou to the many members that make up our brigade and give up their time whenever called and to help make this community a much safer place to live.

Incident Calls

Just the two minor fire calls for the month that crews attended:

1st – A vehicle roll over on Cambewarra Mtn that didn’t require any further assistance once it was made safe

2nd – Pile burn that had a minor escape into surrounding bush area that with the proper tools and water on hand could have been prevented

Training

Fitzroy Falls/Avoca

The Brigade attended a training and familiarization night with KV 7 Alpa and 7 Bravo in the Highlands. This enables us to work closely with our neighbours in the Southern Highlands. Fire scenarios and a briefing from the SES on communication equipment.

Culburra/Shoalhaven Group 2

KV members attended a Group 2 field day at Culburra. This showcased our RAFT capabilities and put on a demonstration of “Dry Firefighting” using hand tools and backpack blowers.

Chainsaw Crew

Members attended a chainsaw working group in Dubbo to enhance safety and work techniques. This is a great opportunity to set the standards and SOP’s for the RFS.

Pile Burns and Burning Off 01/09 – 31/03

During the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) there are three steps that must be completed prior to lighting up APPLY / NOTIFY / ADVISE

    1. APPLY: for a Fire Permit from a local Fire Permit Officer via:
    1. Phone: Shoalhaven FCC 02 4424 4424 between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday
  1. NOTIFY: lodge a Burn Notification at least 24 hours before you light the fire and provide your issued fire permit number
    1. Online: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or via the QR code attached
    2. Phone: Shoalhaven FCC 02 4424 4424 between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday
  2. ADVISE: your immediate neighbours at least 24 hours before you light the fire, WhatsApp groups are acceptable
  3. Adhere to any conditions listed on the fire permit. At least one responsible person must be present on site until the pile is extinguished
  4. Check for any permit cancellations and the RFS or BOM webpages as fire permits will be suspended if the fire danger rating is HIGH or above
  5. Check the upcoming weather conditions as the pile may continue to smoulder for days
  6. If you believe that you cannot safely control the fire once it has been lit, dial 000 immediately

If you have concerns about burning off yourself, please contact the local brigade and we can possibly assist you with your pile burn or check your site for you.
