Illawarra Environmental Education Centre at Killalea

We were so lucky to start Term 4 off with hands-on learning with a whole school excursion at the Illawarra Environmental and Education Centre at Killalea as part of our Science and Geography units. What a great classroom for the day!

Folk Festival

We were really lucky to have Folk Festival performers visit us at school as part of the festival and then be able to perform on stage on Saturday morning at the Marquee. We had a number of students perform in a small group led by Kat Bevis, an amazing solo performance by Elsie and our whole school song Lean on Meled by Mr Gorman.

Grandparents Day

On Friday 27 October we welcomed our grandparents to join us in our classrooms, library and outdoor learning spaces for an afternoon of games to celebrate Grandparents Day! Thank you to everyone who was able to join us and to all of our grandparents who support our school.

AFL Skills sessions

This term, our K-2 students have been working on their throwing, catching and kicking skills on Fridays during AFL Skills sessions.

We welcomed 12 new kindergarten students to Kangaroo Valley Public School this year. They have all had a wonderful start to the year and have particularly enjoyed meeting their buddies. We have 89 students enrolled this year and four classes – K/1P, 1/2D, 3/4J, 4/5/6G.

Mrs Linda Page teaches our kindergarten and Year 1 class, Mrs Camille Delmenico teaches our Year 1 and 2 class, Miss India Jardim is teaching our Year 3 and 4 students while former KVPS student Mr Joshua Gorman teaches our Year 4, 5 and 6 class. Mrs Jane Gripper continues as our Librarian and shares the Learning Support Teacher role with Mrs Cathy Gorman. Mrs Lyn Robinson is our Sports Co-ordinator and teaches each class throughout the week while teachers engage in collaborative planning time.

We are very lucky to have three School Learning Support Officers (formerly known as Teachers Aides) – Mr Jonathan Steele, Mr Bruce Latham and Mrs Angela Sim. Margaret Barton is joined in the office by Kerry Townsend this year, and Brad Hawthorne is looking after our school grounds and maintenance as our General Assistant. I am very pleased to continue in the Relieving Principal position for another year while Mr Andrew Smee continues his leave.

We have already had a busy start to the year with holding our School Swimming Carnival and winning the Small Schools Swimming Carnival by just one point, followed closely by Terara PS. Seventeen of our students have qualified to represent our school and Small Schools at the District Swimming Carnival.

On behalf of the school I would like to thank the Kangaroo Valley Show Committee for organising such a fantastic show for our students to enjoy. It was so wonderful to see so many of our students attend on Friday and Saturday, submit entries into the pavilion, and participate in the various activities for children to enjoy. I would also like to acknowledge our staff who volunteered in various roles at the show from Thursday to Sunday. It was such a great two days and we are looking forward to working with the Show Committee to get involved again next year.

I would also like to thank The Scots College Glengarry Campus students and staff for running the Sausage Sizzle at the Show, with all proceeds donated to our school. It is such a generous gesture which will certainly help with purchasing new classroom resources for our students. We have been very lucky to have the Glengarry students help us at our School Swimming Carnival and work with our K-2 students on Thursday mornings in our classrooms and assist with running fundamental movement skills sessions. We have really enjoyed working closely with the students and staff.

We participated in Clean Up Australia Day again this year, with students visiting the showground and tennis courts to pick up rubbish and learn about ways to look after areas in our community.

On Friday 15 March we held our School Cross Country Carnival at the Kangaroo Valley Showground and we were lucky to have the weather hold off for the day!

Our Kindergarten students visited the mobile library for the first time last month, and were very excited to borrow their first book from the Shoalhaven Library.

Our Kindergarten and Year 1 students have been enjoying playing Maths games focusing on teen numbers.
