Supermarket sidestep builds community
Kangaroo Valley residents who joined the Box Divvy hub run by Nicole and Mark Schwegler from the General Store have grown it into a real community, sharing recipes and meeting up to swap the few items that may find it into the wrong box. Thank you to Mark and Nicole – and all their box-packing staff! – for not only bringing us an alternative to the supermarket duopoly but an opportunity for community and connection.

Reconnecting with nature: How horses have returned to my life
Growing up on a Terara dairy farm (Wondalga Friesian Stud), I was surrounded by the gentle presence of horses, a gift from my father’s deep love for his animals. His passion inspired me from a young age, and when I was 11 he bought me my first horse – a young yearling I named Fleur. I was entrusted to break and train her myself, a journey that sparked my lifelong devotion to working with horses and other animals. This passion led me to become a vet nurse and eventually establish my own horseriding school on Kangaroo Island.
After nearly two decades exploring the healing arts, I’ve come full circle. When my father passed two years ago, I inherited his majestic horses. They now play a vital role in my life once more. Studying Equine Assisted Learning has allowed me to incorporate the horses into my healing practices, alongside massage and energy therapy. Their calming, grounding presence brings strength and serenity to everyone they meet – including myself. I am grateful to my partner Stephen and my neighbour Alan for making it possible to have my beloved horses here in Kangaroo Valley, where they continue to nurture and heal.

Small club running big rewards
I decided to start the KV Run Club as I missed both the social and competitive aspect of running or exercising as a group that I’d got during my military career. I also wanted to try to bring the community together and encourage a social exercise group, not unlike tennis, soccer and frisbee have. I regularly have people commenting on how great it is what I’m doing (whether they come along or not) and that’s always a good feeling, knowing that it’s appreciated. We meet at 7.00 am on Saturdays at the KV Nursery car park. You’re welcome to join us.
